Joseph Rivera

Joseph holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management and Finance from Georgetown University. Today he works as an interactive design consultant and is a founding partner of BAILA Society.

Born in NYC and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Salsa has always been a part of Joseph's life. "Being Puerto Rican and growing up in the LES, Salsa music was the soundtrack for much of my formative years" he recounts. "Some of my fondest memories of my mother are of us sitting on the fire escape on a hot summer day listening to Frankie Ruiz. Throw in the fact that my dad was a Side Street regular and can even be seen in FANIA's musical documentary, 'Our Latin Thing' (Nuestra Cosa), you knew there was a good chance that Salsa would remain with me forever."

Despite his family's strong ties to the Salsa music, Joseph didn't begin his formal study of the dance until 2004 when he began training with New York's top instructors, including Tomas Guererro of Santo Rico and Frankie Martinez of Abakua. Since forming BAILA Society with Daniel Enskat and Ahtoy WonPat-Borja in 2006, Joseph has performed and taught both domestically and internationally at corporate events, Salsa congresses, and excursions.

When not dancing, he enjoys snowboarding, surfing, playing/watching most competitive sports or just spending time with family and friends.

I have been reading your blog now for quite a long time and really love it. I don't know if it's your style or not , but do you think you could perhaps do a post on the oil spill in the gulf?

I love your thoughts and opinions, and would love to see your commentary on this sad tragedy.
